What is the history of the Cuba Libre cocktail?

Cuba Libre (Spanish for Free Cuba) is the popular name of a cocktail that contains rum (optional), cola, and lime juice and was created in the 1890s in Havana, Cuba during the final years of Spanish rule and shortly after Cuba’s independence from Spain in 1898. The drink was actually named after the liberation of Cuba from Spain and it became very popular throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. It’s also often known as an Antonio, named after Antonio Maceo, who fought against the Spanish in Cuba’s war of independence from Spain in 1895 to 1898, and adopted by Cubans as their national hero.
