What is the history of the Blue Lagoon cocktail?

Nothing will transport you to an island paradise quite like a blue lagoon cocktail!
The Blue Lagoon cocktail was invented in 1954 by Hugo Ensslin, head bartender at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. It is made with Blue Curacao, orange liqueur, lemon juice and fresh cream. Besides being served as a dessert drink at bars and restaurants, it’s also enjoyed at home as an elegant after-dinner cocktail. The original version is very sweet, but bartenders have created several variations that are quite different from each other—and all are worthy of your attention!

Recipe & ingredients to make Blue Lagoon cocktail

2 oz. White Rum (optional)
1 oz. blue curacao liqueur
4 oz. lemonade (unsweetened)
Pour rum and blue curacao over ice cubes in glass; add lemonade, stir well.

Garnish with fruit of your choice. The traditional way is with pineapple and orange slices but you can also use strawberries or blueberries for garnish.

How to make a non-alcoholic Blue Lagoon mocktail?

We also have you covered if you’re looking for a way to use blue curacao as a mixer. To make non-alcoholic version of The Blue Lagoon, start by adding three or four ice cubes into a mixing glass. Add 3 ounces of pineapple or Citrus based juice and 1⁄2 ounce of blue curacao. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds before straining into an ice-filled rocks glass over fresh ice. Pour 2 ounces of pomegranate juice on top and garnish with a lime wedge or two, so guests can squeeze their own before drinking it down!
